We live in increasingly dangerous times.

As I've written elsewhere, I am dubious about "the standard evangelical model" of eschatology. Nevertheless, we live in a unique (and uniquely dangerous) period of history. What we are in is the first ramp up of a high technological civilization. We don't know what the limits are. We have no Australia, no great western frontier, and right now no moon or asteroid colonies and no way to get there -- no place to run, and no place to hide. The potential for the abuse of power is greater than ever, because the technology is more capable than ever before.

Homeland Security

Our American KGB, from a mailing list:

"In my office, we have a software developer who is a Russian immigrant to the
United States. She's not a libertarian of the anarchist bent, but having
grown up during the era of the Soviet Union and lived through the subsequent
fall, she naturally has a wonderful perspective on the role of government in
one's life.

"When we happened to be chatting about the advisability of a Federal
Department of Homeland Security, she pointed out that the closest Russian
translation for this would, in fact, be 'KGB'. The exact translation is
pretty much unprintable for me and involves a couple of idiomatic
expressions. Suffice to say that according to her, an approximate
translation would be something like 'Committee of Home Security' or
'Committee of Motherland Security.' Note that this is extremely similar to
the Soviet "Committee of State Security" which was also KGB in Russian.

So, when translated as directly as possible, the Department of Homeland
Security will, in fact, be 'KGB.' "

Schools and some of the other things that get done to kids

For most of us, our children are the one thing of ours that is going to last past our lifetimes. No one's an expert. We get one chance. We usually start having and raising our kids when we're young and naive. We're all "winging it".

You can't treat kids like adults. Kids need direction, discipline, protection and education. They need to be trained to civility -- to be civilized. But they also need as time goes by to be let go into the world. The goal is to raise adults.

The weird things schools do. Public schools are teaching their subjects to exist in a police state.

Separation of School and State Education and schooling needs to be rethought, from the ground up. It doesn't make any sense to me that the best way to educate kids is to group them in age cohorts and march them in lockstep for 12 years.

Kids who shoot up schools -- bad kids, too many guns, Doom, Dungeons & Dragons, violent TV, the big evil In-ter-net or what? The Fully Informed Jury Association. "Jury nullification" is the concept that jurors have the right to judge not only the facts of a case, but the law itself, and can convict or acquit accordingly. Illinois explicitly denies jury nullification: "Even if a juror does not agree with the law the judge has stated, he or she is still obligated to follow that law. The judge decides the law. The jury determines the facts." --from "A Handbook for Illinois Jurors"

Currently, the only weapons available for transfer are the M-14 (7.62mm) rifle, .45-caliber automatic pistol, and the .38 special revolvers with the 4-inch barrel. Additionally, existing stocks on .38 special revolvers with the 2-inch barrel and 12-gauge (riot shotgun) have been completely exhausted. However, we are still taking requests for these weapons until further notice. Please note we are no longer taking weapon requests for M-16 (5.56mm rifle), M-21 (sniper rifle), and/or M-79 (grenade launcher) due to non-availability. Waco What happened on April 19? Waco, for one.

Waco is, in my opinion, the single most horrible thing that's happened in this country in my lifetime. From start to finish, it should not have happened.

Barr calls for new Waco hearings WASHINGTON, Aug. 25 (UPI) - Reports that the FBI fired pyrotechnic tear gas canisters during the operation that ended the 1995 Branch Davidian compound siege in Waco prompted a Congressman to call (Wednesday) for new hearings into the controversial operation. Rep. Bob Barr, R-Ga., sent a letter to the chairman of the House Government Reform Committee and to Attorney General Janet Reno saying the reports raise questions as to whether government officials lied to Congress about what exactly happened at Waco."
