Archibald was born in the parish of Fogo, Berwickshire. Alison was also from
Berwickshire and they were married in the neighboring parish of Swinton & Simprin.
They lived in the parish of Dunse (now spelled "Duns") and had three unnamed children
who died in infancy before Betty and Margaret were born. In 1795 they emigrated with their
two daughters to Argyle, New York, where their three sons were born, and they farmed for
the rest of their lives.

(8/1/1784-4/29/1833) She was born in Parish of Duns, Berwickshire, Scotland. He
was born in Old Deer, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, just a few miles west of the city
of Peterhead. He came to America in January of 1806 and worked as a carpenter.
Alexander was badly injured one summer during the harvest while working on
Archibald Armstrong's farm near Argyle, NY. Betty, the farmer's daughter, nursed
him back to health, and they were later married. Nine of their eleven children
survived to adulthood.

Alex taught school for a year in Paw Paw, IL and then worked for International
Harvester in Chicago for a few years. He bought 160 acres, three miles north
of Goldfield, Iowa, and proposed to Theresa by mail. The local Indians used
to beg for food, gesturing how hungry they were by measuring on their arms.
The Damson plum trees had to be guarded when the plums were ripe, but the
big apple orchard just west of the house was relatively safe from predators.
